At CHARM, we strive to ensure that every animal finds a loving, responsible, and permanent home. Our adoption process helps us match the right animal with the right family, while ensuring the safety and well-being of the animals in our care. Please follow the steps below to adopt a pet from our organization.
1. Submit Adoption Application
- Complete an Adoption Application:
To begin the process, prospective adopters must submit an adoption application. This form will ask for basic information about you, your household, and your lifestyle to ensure a good match with the animal you are interested in adopting. We encourage you to be as thorough and honest as possible in your responses.

- Contact information
- Household information (e.g., adults, children, other pets)
- Experience with animals
- Preferences for the type of pet you’re seeking
- Application Review:
Our team will review your application to ensure it aligns with the animal’s needs and characteristics. If any additional information is required, you will be contacted for clarification. NOTE: if you have applied for an animal and haven't received a response, check your spam folder!
2. Veterinary Reference Check
- Contact Your Veterinarian:
We require a veterinary reference check for all potential adopters who currently own or have previously owned pets. This helps us verify that your pets have been regularly vaccinated, spayed or neutered, and properly cared for.
Please provide the contact details of your current or previous veterinarian(s).
- Veterinary Reference Verification:
Our team will reach out to your veterinarian to confirm the health and care history of your pets. This includes confirming routine care and vaccinations, as well as any past health concerns or issues.
3. Lease Verification (For Renters Only)
- Provide Lease Agreement:
If you are renting, we ask that you submit a copy of your lease agreement, which should state that pets are allowed.
Important: Please check with your landlord or property management company if there are any specific rules regarding pets.
- Landlord/Property Manager Contact:
We may contact your landlord or property management company to confirm that pets are allowed and that there are no pet-related restrictions or fees.
4. Background Check
- Basic Background Check:
As part of our adoption process, we conduct a basic background check of publicly available information to ensure the safety and well-being of our animals. This check includes reviewing criminal history to confirm there are no convictions related to animal cruelty or neglect.
- Authorization for Background Check:
Applicants will be asked to sign a consent form authorizing us to conduct this background check. The results will be kept confidential.
5. Adoption Approval
- Final Review:
Once your application has passed the veterinary reference check, lease verification (for renters), and background check, the animal matchmaker will review all the information. If everything is in order, your adoption application will be approved.
- Approval Notification:
You will be notified by email or phone about the status of your adoption approval. If you are approved, you will be invited to schedule a meet and greet with the animal you are interested in adopting.
6. Meet and Greet
- Schedule a Meet and Greet:
Once approved, the foster caregiver will coordinate a meet and greet at a mutually convenient time. This is your chance to spend time with the animal, get to know their personality, and ensure that they are a good fit for your home.
- Final Decision:
After the meet and greet, if you and the animal are both comfortable, you will be able to move forward with the adoption and take the animal home and begin their happily ever after.
7. Adoption Finalization
- Adoption Agreement:
Once you decide to adopt, you will be asked to sign an adoption agreement, which outlines your responsibilities as a pet parent and our commitment to supporting you through the transition. The agreement will also include a section regarding the animal’s return policy if the adoption does not work out - all CHARM Rescue animals must be returned to CHARM if the adoption is unsuccessful.
- Adoption Fee:
The adoption fee, which helps cover the costs of veterinary care, food, and supplies, will be due at this time.
- Take Your New Pet Home:
After all paperwork is completed and the adoption fee is paid, you will be able to take your new pet home! Our team will provide you with all relevant information about your new pet’s health, care needs, and any special instructions.
8. Post-Adoption Support
- Follow-Up:
We offer post-adoption support to ensure that the transition into your home goes smoothly. Our team may follow up with you after the adoption to check on the animal's well-being and provide any advice or assistance as needed.
